Storing Audio Files on the Go
In this blog post, I’d like to share how I store my field recordings, especially when using the Voyage Audio Ambisonic Microphone, and how we capture videos while traveling with our iPhone.
Thankfully, we no longer need to carry heavy cameras, which removes at least 12 kg from our luggage! We enjoy using the DJI OSMO Pocket 3 and the iPhone 15 Pro for our content creation, which is definitely enough for our needs. However, Libby often finds herself in situations where she reminds us that we need to preserve our recording time since we usually have only about 30 minutes left on the phone.
Recording with the Voyage Audio Microphone
There’s no change in how I store data for the Sound Devices, Zoom, or Tascam recorders. But with our newest second order ambisonic microphone, I can record 8 tracks directly onto my iPhone or iPad. I’m happy with this fantastic pocket SSD, which is easy to assemble and fun to use. One of its best features is that you don’t need a heavy recorder. I record directly onto my iPhone or iPad, making the process much easier. The setup time is super fast and user-friendly when using the Voyage Audio application.
Efficient File Management
After recording, I transfer the files directly from the app to my new SSD, which I can plug right into my phone. If I have fast Wi-Fi, I can even upload the files directly to Dropbox, which is especially useful for preserving unique recordings I want to keep safe.
With this new SSD, we’re saving so much space and weight. As full-time travelers, this makes a significant difference in our lives.
What’s Included
JEYI 2230
The SSD enclosure is only $20 and can store up to 2TB, providing us with 170 minutes of ProRes footage recorded on the iPhone, as well as ample space for my field recordings. However, I haven’t yet found a way to record directly from the Voyage Audio microphone to the iPhone and then to the SSD. If I discover a solution, I’ll provide an update.
AreMe 180° USB C
This component is fantastic because it allows you to attach the SSD to the back of the iPhone, saving space and preventing it from breaking off when inserting the SSD cover directly into the phone. Accidents happen, and this is a great way to prevent them.
Western Digital WD_BLACK 1TB SSD
If you’re thinking, “Wow, $20 for the whole thing?”—here comes the more expensive part! You can choose from several options, like Kingston or Western Digital. We purchased the 1 TB SSD from Western Digital for around $90 because it is also an Amazon choice with almost 19000 ratings, and it works like a charm.
Conclusion
Storing recordings and videos has never been this seamless! With microphones like the Voyage Audio Ambisonic Microphone and our portable SSD setup, we’re finally have a super light setup while still recording high quality sounds. This setup has again changed the way we record and travel—it’s lightweight, efficient, and secure. Whether we’re transferring files to Dropbox on the fly or recording directly on our iPhone, this new approach lets us focus on what we love: creating and sharing unique audio experiences from around the world.
