If you’re looking for a unique addition to your sound effects library, consider getting the sounds of a 1972 Eastman Kodak slide projector. When I stumbled upon one at Libby’s family’s basement in Iowa, I knew it was a golden opportunity to capture some amazing slide projector sounds for post-production and sound design.
After plugging in the slide projector, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it still worked perfectly despite being covered in dust. I used a Zoom H6 with an attached XY microphone to record the sounds, which included the hum of the projector’s fan, the sound of slides being inserted into the slots, and the cycling of the slides on the carousel.
Recording these types of sounds helps to preserve the audio history of past eras, and they can be used in a variety of ways in modern productions. If you’re interested in adding some vintage flair to your sound design, consider recording the sounds of a 1972 Eastman Kodak slide projector.
