Our trip from Kagoshima to Sakurajima by ferry was nothing short of spectacular. Standing on the upper deck, with the vista of the smoking volcano against the sky and the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the ferry, was an experience to remember.
I managed to record a variety of sounds: the waves lapping at different sides of the ferry, the exhaust's puff, the roar of the engine, and the hum of metallic vibrations that seemed to sing along with the motion of the ferry.
The whipping sound of a plastic cover caught by the wind, along with the muted conversations of fellow passengers, added another layers to this soundscape.
On the return leg from Sakurajima, I went to the parking deck area and with nobody around, not even a single car in sight, it was the perfect spot for some quiet and eerie ambiences. Recording inside the cabins proved challenging due to the music, but I did catch the sound of the ferry walk gate as it was automatically pulled in, just before we departed.
But that's not all. I also recorded the seaside's ambience while another ferry left Kagoshima harbor including a mix of waves splashing, an alarm signaling, the stern door closing, and a brief announcement from the captain.
The departure of another ferry introduced the deep rumble of its engine and the intensified clash of waves against the shore.
