There’s a small village just outside of Ubud, Bali that’s home to thousands of herons, known as Petulu. This village has become a sanctuary for the birds, and every day at around 5 am (although we recommend arriving at 6 am), the herons wake up and start their daily activities. It’s a spectacular sight, with the birds flying and chirping as the sun rises and the villagers begin their day.
The activity of thousands of birds chirping and flying while the sun comes up is one of the most beautiful and unique experiences you can have in Bali. The village of Petulu has become famous for its heron sanctuary, with many birdwatchers and nature lovers coming from around the world to witness the sight. But it’s not just the herons that make this village special – the soundscape of Petulu is a symphony of sounds that you won’t find anywhere else.
During our visit to Petulu, we recorded a mini sound library that includes the sounds of rooster calls, people cleaning the streets, drums from a nearby temple, and a scooter passing by. We even captured the sound of the temple guard waking up the village with several massive rings of a bell – an experience that you won’t forget anytime soon. Luckily, we were across the street, so we could record this sound as well!
