That was a fantastic week in Porto. We came from Atlanta and spent one week in this beautiful city and I can’t wait to go back someday. It is safe, clean and the people are still nice. I should also mention that cost of living is very reasonable compared to other cities in Europe. Grocery Shopping in Porto is fun too. I remember being on a market in Germany and I paid for 3 tomatoes and one cucumber 5 Euro. That wasn’t fun at all. Sorry I just love Porto. While we are around we where so lucky to see one of the biggest festivals in town. The Queima das Fitas.
It means in Portuguese Ribbon Burning and is a traditional festivity of the students organized originally by the students of the University of Coimbra which is the oldest university of the country, and was for centuries the only one university in Portugal.
The festival runs for one full week and starts in May at the square of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra. The high point of the festivities is the Cortejo, a parade beginning in Alta (upper Coimbra, the university historic and this is where we joined the parade and recorded with the binaural microphones.
Did you know that J.K Rowling got her inspirations for Hogwart and her first Harry Potter in Porto? She lived a few years in Porto and not only the famous library Livraria Lello gave her inspiration also the traditional costumes that the students wearing at Hogwarts are much the same.
We walked across the bookstore but didn’t enter. It is not the same anymore. People are lined up to get inside the bookstore.
I recorded for around 15 minutes walking around the festival. I recorded with the Roland CS-10EM and with the Zoom H1. Perfect “Field Recording Survival Kit”! You can listen to the students singing, shouting, screaming and overall having a lot of fun.

But I have another recording for you while walking around the city center. It is around 8 minutes long and you can listen to a typically busy day in Porto mixed with street music, tourists, and some singing students. There is a little bit of wind noise in the recordings but not much. So you have enough sound variations in both recordings. Enjoy :)!
