Welcome to a new Series that I just made up! I call it “Sound Snippets“! These free sound effects or ambient location sounds can be 10 seconds or 10 minutes and often times there was no time for a video!
What I mean by that is that I always walk around with my Zoom recorder and if I hear something interesting, I have to be quick to record this sound or it is gone forever or I have to wait a long time!
That can be ambulance, police sirens or a construction sound for example!
These Sounds I call “Sound Snippets”!
I think everybody knows the Movie Men at Work with Charly Sheen and his brother Emilio Estevez and the Garbage Truck Scene, right? If not here is one clip!
I go jogging almost every morning in the Costa Mesa Back Bay as I saw the garbage truck coming into our neighborhood! In this moment I remembered the movie and told myself I need to record this sound and if not now than I have to wait at least for another week!
And that is the thing about sounds! If you listen to the sound from this 1990 garbage truck it is a totally different sound! Different truck, different engine, different environment and the most important part is that is it a different time! The sounds that we listen to now aren’t available anymore in the next 10 years if we do not capture them! That is also a reason why I create this free sound library! In a few years, our website will be a time capsule for anyone!
So, I ran up to my room and grabbed the Zoom H6 (the sound is only recorded on this recorder with the XY Microphone) and walked slowly behind the truck!
We living in a gated area so the truck driver needed to drive slowly to grab the trash bins!
We have about 5 minutes of sound footage and I am going to describe the sounds the best I can!
And as a reminder, I only used for this recording the Zoom H6 with the Windjammer what comes in this bundle!
Start!
-You can already listen to the power of the engine and when the
truck empties the bins!
-The squeaking of the breaks when the truck backs up!
–Beeping noise of the reverse gear.
-You can listen to an airplane flying over from the John Wayne
Airport!
-the puff noise from the hydraulic!
-Another backing up and you hear the beeping sound effect!
-The sound when the truck puts the bin back on the street!
-A bird sound before another beeping noise!
-The truck goes back and forth!
-Squeaking breaks again!
-You can listen that there are some bottles in the trash!
now I go very close to the truck and it’s getting louder!
-Everything is a little bit more intense now!
-Rattle sound and the “puff” of the hydraulic!
-Now the truck drives away and another car comes by!
End!
I think these are some amazing sounds!!!
Now let’s talk about the truck!
If I am right and I made a correct research than this truck is a Peterbilt 520 with the natural gas applications.
You can get the Model 520 with 9-or 12-liter engines and 320 or 380 horsepower (PS).

Every Country has its own fleet or manufacturers with a completely different design or engine!
