Footsteps Sound Effects Mud Field Vietnam

Recording footsteps sound effects in dirty mud field in Vietnam!

Hi Guys! Yesterday I had a sound request for a movie production and somebody needs special footsteps sound effects like walking and running in a muddy field here in Vietnam.

Such a pleasure for me to record footstep sounds and I packed my equipment and drove around Hoi An. I came across several rice fields filled with water and mud but after watching all the hard working people I decided not to walk into the rice fields.

The reason why is that most fields are already prepared for the upcoming rice season and everything looks nice and prepared and I can just stomp around the fields and possibly destroy something. Another reason is that, after the fields are prepared, farmers spraying pesticides all over the seeds and it looks like an oil film and this is maybe not so healthy for my feet.

But why driving so far?  I have a mud field next to our rented house I just saw it and found the perfect spot.

How I recorded the footsteps sound effects

I took off my shoes and walked up and down the field. I needed to do that because I lost my shows in the field after five steps. Then there was this mudhole and I just places the microphone very close to my feet and simulated fast footsteps and slow footsteps. I was running and walking up and down.

It’s good to have the Pistol Grip so I could face the microphone down and record. If you know my recording and video about the “Cracking Wooden Sticks” then you know the full setup!

To record these footstep sounds I used the Rode NTG4+, the PG2-R pistol grip, and the Zoom H6! Record in 92/24 high-quality wav.

For me, the sound design and the musical score is a big part of what makes scary movies work.
